Crossword Puzzles
The classic newspaper word puzzle — fill a grid using intersecting answers to clues.
The crossword puzzle has been a newspaper staple since 1913. Players fill a grid of black and white squares using words that cross each other, guided by numbered clues for Across and Down answers. Difficulty scales widely — a Monday NYT crossword is accessible to beginners, while a Saturday puzzle is designed to challenge experienced solvers. The Sunday puzzle is larger (21×21) but roughly Thursday difficulty.
Types of clues
- Straight/definition clues: "Capital of France" → PARIS.
- Cryptic clues: Each clue contains a hidden definition plus a wordplay component (anagram, reversal, hidden word, etc.). Common in British crosswords.
- Theme clues: Many puzzles have a hidden theme linking certain long answers — spotting the theme early can unlock multiple answers.
- Question mark clues: A "?" at the end signals wordplay or a pun — expect the unexpected.
Strategy for beginners
- Fill in the short answers you're certain of first — correct crossing letters unlock longer answers.
- Common crossword fill words to know: ARIA, ALOE, OREO, ERIE, EEL, ERA, ORE, ALE, ODE, ESNE. These appear constantly.
- Look for fill-in-the-blank clues first ("___ of the Flies") — these are usually the easiest.
- Use our Check Dictionary tool to verify whether a word you're unsure about is valid before committing to it.
