NYT Connections
Group sixteen words into four hidden categories — but the links are deliberately tricky.
Connections is a daily puzzle published by the New York Times in which players are presented with 16 words and must sort them into four groups of four, each sharing a hidden connection. The categories are colour-coded by difficulty: Yellow (easiest), Green, Blue, and Purple (hardest). Players have four chances to guess incorrectly before the game ends.
How to play
- Read all 16 words carefully before making any selections.
- Select four words you believe share a category, then click "Submit".
- If correct, those four words are removed and their category revealed. If wrong, you lose one of your four attempts.
- The category description is only revealed once you correctly select its group.
Strategy tips
- Beware the red herrings. The NYT deliberately includes words that seem to fit an obvious category but actually belong elsewhere. A word that appears to fit three groups almost certainly belongs to the one you least expect.
- The Purple category typically has an abstract or wordplay connection — "___ something", "things that can follow X", or cultural references. Treat unusual groupings as potential Purple answers.
- Start with Yellow (easiest) to narrow down the board, but if you're uncertain, start with whichever group you feel most confident about regardless of colour.
- Use the "Shuffle" button if the layout is confusing you — sometimes a fresh arrangement reveals patterns.
