Scattergories
Name things in a category starting with a randomly rolled letter — before time runs out.
Scattergories is a creative-thinking word game in which players must name items in a given category that all begin with the same letter. The letter is chosen by rolling a 20-sided die. Players have three minutes to fill in answers for 12 categories on their answer sheet. After time is called, identical answers are crossed out — only unique answers score a point.
Scoring
- 1 point per unique answer (not matched by any other player).
- Bonus points if multiple words in your answer all start with the target letter (e.g. "Pink Porcupine" for letter P scores 2 points).
- Answers can be challenged — the group votes on acceptability.
Strategy tips
- Think beyond the obvious. The most common answer in any category scores nothing — aim for correct answers that others won't think of.
- Proper nouns are allowed in most versions — use celebrities, cities, brands, and characters to find answers other players skip.
- For difficult letters (X, Q, Z), lean on place names, brand names, and scientific terms rather than common words.
- Multi-word answers where every word starts with the target letter can double your score for a category.
