Words With Friends
The smartphone Scrabble — play asynchronously against anyone in the world.
Words With Friends is a free mobile word game developed by Zynga, available on iOS and Android. It plays similarly to Scrabble — players take turns placing tiles on a board to form words — but with a different board layout, tile distribution, and point values. Crucially, you can play asynchronously: take your turn when you like and your opponent responds whenever suits them.
Key differences from Scrabble
- The board is 15×15 but premium squares are in different positions.
- Tile values differ slightly — for example, S is worth 1 point (same as Scrabble) but there are only 5 S tiles vs Scrabble's 4.
- Uses the ENABLE dictionary (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon), which accepts some words Scrabble doesn't and rejects some it does.
- The game includes a "Swap+" feature letting you exchange tiles without skipping your turn (costs coins).
- Word validity is checked automatically — you cannot play an invalid word.
Strategy tips
- The Triple Word Score squares in Words With Friends are placed differently — study the board before planning attacks.
- Because you can look words up between turns, focus on tile management and board control.
- Use our Anagram Solver with the ENABLE dictionary to find the best plays from your rack.
