Balderdash

Invent fake definitions for real obscure words — and vote for which ones sound most convincing.

Balderdash is a bluffing party game published by Mattel. One player reads an obscure real word (or movie title, person, date, or law — depending on the category) and all other players secretly write a fake but plausible-sounding definition. The real definition is shuffled in with the fakes, and players vote on which definition they believe is genuine. Points are scored for guessing correctly and for fooling opponents into voting for your fake.

Scoring

  • 2 points for guessing the real definition correctly.
  • 1 point for each other player who votes for your fake definition.
  • The card reader scores 2 points if nobody guesses the real definition correctly.
  • In some versions, additional points are awarded if your fake definition is identical to the real one.

How to write convincing fake definitions

  • Mirror the style of real dictionary definitions — use formal, slightly dry language with grammatical labels ("n.", "adj.", "v.tr.").
  • Pick a plausible but specific niche — "a 19th-century tool used in cooperage" sounds far more convincing than "a type of hat".
  • Aim for the middle ground: too obscure and players won't believe it, too obvious and it won't fool anyone.
  • Know your audience — tailor your fake definitions to what your group of players would find most believable based on their knowledge gaps.
