Upwords

Like Scrabble, but letters stack — replace tiles to change words and score big.

Upwords is a 3D word game published by Hasbro in which players build words on a 10×10 board and then stack new tiles on top of existing ones to change words. For example, the word CAT on the board can become BAT by stacking a B on the C. This stacking mechanic fundamentally changes strategy compared to Scrabble — any position on the board is always potentially useful, and the score for any word is the number of tiles in the word multiplied by the height of the stack.

Scoring

  • Score = (number of letters in word) × (total tiles in the stack of each letter in that word).
  • All tiles have the same face value — no premium letter scores like Scrabble.
  • Board squares have no premium values; instead, tall stacks create high scores.
  • A word made entirely of flat (single-layer) tiles only scores 2 points minimum, so stacking is essential for high scores.

Strategy tips

  • Build tall stacks deliberately — a 5-letter word where every tile is 3 high scores 15 points. Target common vowel and consonant positions for repeated stacking.
  • Change the most common words (short common words like IN, AT, AN) to deny your opponents easy plays while boosting the stack height for your future plays.
  • You cannot stack more than 5 tiles high, so plan your stacking chains before the cap is reached.
  • Use our Unscramble tool to find words that share consonant frames with words already on the board — they're your best stacking candidates.
