Word Search

Find hidden words running in any of eight directions through a grid of letters.

Word Search (also called Word Find or Word Seek) is a classic puzzle in which a list of words is hidden within a rectangular grid of letters. Words can run horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, and in any direction — forwards or backwards. The surrounding grid is filled with random letters. The goal is to find and circle every word on the list. Word searches appear in newspapers, puzzle books, and countless educational and entertainment contexts worldwide.

The eight search directions

  • Horizontal: left to right, or right to left.
  • Vertical: top to bottom, or bottom to top.
  • Diagonal: four diagonal directions (down-right, down-left, up-right, up-left).
  • In themed word searches, words are sometimes restricted to fewer directions for easier puzzles.

Solving strategy

  • Search for the first letter of each word in the grid first, then check all eight directions from that point. This is faster than scanning every cell randomly.
  • Start with the longest and most unusual words — they are easier to spot because uncommon letter combinations stand out in the filler letters.
  • Look for double letters (LL, TT, SS) — they're visually distinctive and common in English words, making them quick to spot.
  • In themed puzzles, guess the theme words before looking — knowing you're searching for "SAXOPHONE" is easier than searching for a word you've half-forgotten.
